CYCLONE FANS

WARNING: When the fan is off (disengaged), the fan will still spin slowly due to bearing drag (approx. 150 RPM). Under NO circumstances should you place your hand, or any object, in the fan while the engine is running.

You may hear a slight chirp when the clutch engages, and it may be more noticeable at higher RPMs. This is a normal occurrence and has no harmful effect on the life of the clutch.

CONTROLLER

The controller for your new Cyclone Power Fan has two buttons. First is the Red Power button. Second is the Blue Super Cooling button.

The controller also has two LEDs. During normal operation the LED to the right of the Power button will be one of three colors:

  • Green - Automatic mode
  • Amber - Throttle Position Override
  • Red - Clutch (fan) engaged

When you start your truck, the green Automatic LED will light up if the cab of the truck is cool. If the cab temperature is warm and your foot is off the throttle, the red Engaged LED will light up and the fan will engage.

While driving, the red Engaged LED will light up and the fan will engage anytime the engine coolant and/or transmission fluid reach preset temperatures.

The Power Module of the Cyclone also senses when your foot is on the throttle. The fan will engage when your foot is off the throttle and the temperature in the cab exceeds the pre-set level. This feature avoids heat climb that is often present during stops, improves air conditioning performance, and helps slow the truck when approaching an intersection, or in heavy traffic.

To override the throttle position sensor, you may press the Power button once. The amber Throttle Position Override LED will light up. The Throttle Position Override mode terminates:

  1. when the blue Super Cooling button is pressed,
  2. when you turn off your truck,
  3. when the engine or transmission readings reach maximum, or
  4. any time the fan engages for any reason.

If you then choose to re-activate the Throttle Position Override mode, you must select it again by pressing the Power button. You can manually deactivate the Throttle Position Override mode by pressing the Power button when the amber LED is lighted.

NOTE: You may prefer to use the Throttle Position Override mode (amber LED) when you are using cruise control.

You should use Super Cooling in situations when you desire improved air conditioning performance.

Any time you wish to engage the Super Cooling feature, simply press the blue button and the Blue LED to the left of the button will light. Super Cooling will stay in effect until you press the Power button, or until you turn off your truck.

EXAMPLES OF OPERATIONS

In most driving situations, you will be able to leave the Cyclone Power Fan in Automatic mode. In some cases you may want to take advantage of the controls included with the Cyclone.

For example, during city driving during cool weather when air conditioning is not needed, and when your foot is on and off the throttle frequently, you may want to engage Throttle Position Override mode to avoid having the fan constantly turning off and on. To reach Throttle Position Override mode, simply press the Red Power Button until the amber LED lights up.

On the other hand, while driving in the city during warm weather, and you want to be sure that you have adequate air conditioning performance, you may choose to leave the Cyclone in Automatic mode so that the fan will engage when your foot is off the throttle.

When you encounter heavy traffic during warm weather, and speeds are slower and you don’t have the benefit of much ram air cooling, you may want to use Super Cooling to improve air conditioning performance. To reach Super Cooling mode, simply press the Blue button, and the Blue LED will light up.

If you are driving in the mountains, you may want to be sure you are in Automatic mode so that when you are on a descent with your foot off the throttle, the fan will engage and assist in slowing your truck. As with any form of engine braking, increasing your RPMs by downshifting will increase the effect of the braking assistance provided by the fan.

As you get used to the features of the Cyclone Power fan, you will probably find your own preferred setting for particular situations. You can experiment with the settings in different conditions since the safety features listed in the next section will protect your Cyclone Power Fan and your truck.

SAFETY FEATURES

As mentioned in the "Controller" section, the red Engaged LED will light up and the fan will automatically engage anytime the engine coolant and/or transmission fluid reach preset temperatures. The fan will stay engaged until the temperatures are sufficiently reduced.

If either the engine coolant temperature or the transmission oil temperature reach excessive levels, the controller will emit a constant beep, and the Blue and Red LEDs will flash alternately. If this occurs while the fan is engaged, you should relieve the stress on your truck by reducing your speed or by stopping for a brief period.

Your Cyclone Power Fan also includes safeguards which will alert you if there is a problem with the operation of your unit. If the Power Module detects that there is an open circuit to one of the sensors, the fan will automatically engage and the Blue LED will flash. If this occurs, you will need to check the wiring and sensors for engine coolant and transmission fluid. Be sure that all connections are secure and that the connector is fastened correctly to the Power Module.

If continuity to the clutch is not present, the controller will beep on and off, and the Blue and Red LEDs will flash alternately. If this occurs, you will need to be sure the wiring to the clutch is intact and the connections are secure. Note: Since the fan will not engage if continuity to the clutch is lost, it is vital to correct the situation immediately to avoid the possibility of damage to the truck.
